PaaV Podcast #3

Direct Download: paav3.mp3

Runtime: 58 minutes

Peanut buttery Podcast #3 is here! Somehow we managed to spend 58 minutes discussing 9 minutes of screentime. We're special like that. We'd both like to thank everyone, again, for their awesome comments and emails. This isn't nearly as fun without you guys, so keep 'em coming.

Notes for the week:

- Dani started the night with technical problems, so Liz did some changes on her end hoping to help. In the end, we ended up with a bad echo in the recording on Liz's side, but neither of us heard it during the call. I did what I could to make it ok, but there is some background echo in some places I couldn't get rid of. At times it sounds like I'm in a crowded bar, but alas, I'm not. Its basically fine with speakers but not so much with headphones. So sorry!!

- Liz did not get enough words for the week last week. We know it's a brain-bender, but try to sum up the Otalia week in one word and leave it in the comments. It's fun!

- P & G doesnt make peanut butter but they do make Pringles! Yummy w/ PB & banana sandwiches!

- Lynn Liccardo's Red Room article on GL - "What Would Irna Think?"

- Jennifer Gibbons' Red Room article on GL - "A Woman Named Irna"

- Liz is taking bets on how long Dani will last spoiler free in the comments!

- Dani would like to let people know that Liz is a horrible spoiler rehab sponsor, she's been tempting relentlessly!

  3. Once again, good fun. It's getting so I anticipate your podcasts almost as much as I anticipate Otalia.

I, too, noticed that the resort brochure clearly showed blue skies and palm trees, and not a mountain resort. It wasn't even a subtle faux pas, as the brochure is shown head on. Sloppy.

Re Frank's beat-down: fun as hell to watch. I have a lot of time for Frank - he's not a bad person, just a dullard and a moron - but he had that beat-down coming. I love it when Dani compares his posturing to Varsity Blues, because the way he ends up in that fight is also right out of some teenage boy's page book; lose your temper, physically charge after the person you're angry at, and get your ass whooped. Her love for Olivia aside, one very good reason for Natalia not to end up with Frank is that he isn't really a grown-up. She already *has* a son. I think Frank's time with me has run out. And his "mean" face makes me laugh.

On Doris outing the girls: I agree that it was mean-spirited but, make no mistake, Doris is not a nice person. She showed some real humanity and compassion at the wedding-that-never-was, and that was great. I loved her for it. But, overall, she's a nasty woman. Remember - this is the woman...the LESBIAN - who was more than happy to call a press conference about the horrors of the My Two Mommies class report. So we know that, for the right dollar amount, she's more than happy to be the Uncle Tom of dykedom. I don't think she and Olivia will ever be friends. They shared a secret (and an ex-husband) but I see little chance of friendship in their future, and I'm fine with that. In fact, I'd kind of hate it if the fact that she's a lesbian made her O and N's ex officio friend. That would reek too much of the thing that already happens when there's a black character on an all-white show: the minute another black character joins the cast, it's obvious who they'll pair up with. 'Cause, you know, blacks always hang with blacks...and dykes hang with dykes. Just no. I liked the outing as a plot device: it *had* to happen, and Doris was the best person to spill the means. But, yes, it was a shitty thing to do. And, yes, that was in keeping with Doris' character.

As for Frank reading so much into what really is a pretty benign, friendly hug between O and N, I think it's more a matter of Frank, fresh from hearing Doris' bombshell, and replaying in his mind the fact that every time he walks in on O and N, they're touching or hugging or crying. Or all three. And Frank also taking note that Natalia, herself, has never, ever really explained why she jilted him. And that his own father has hinted at this. So, I think it's perfectly realistic for Frank to see this really simple hug, suddenly process everything that's been staring him the face for months, and have a sort of eureka moment. It's like Robert Deniro suddenly coming back from a catatonic state in Awakenings.

How cool is it to hear you two rock stars talk about my insanely over-analytic post about religion and faith and the role it plays in this story? (Which, really, I don't believe *can* be over-analyzed.) Thanks for reading it and not falling asleep.

Y'all know I'm not half as pissed off at Ken Corday as most people are. I think he made some really good points that get lost in the fact that he comes off as a complete dick. Having read about Irna Philips for years (I grew up in a multi-generational, soap-obsessed home) I think she would have loved Otalia, and the stuff going on with Shayne and Dinah (implausible, yes, but pure, unadulterated soap opera.) I also think she would have HATED Blizzie and Universal Studios, and what the show looked like just a year ago. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time this weekend watching and re-watching episodes from 2007 and 2008, and a lot of it is just awful to look at...way too cold and sterile. The big exception? (This should come as no surprise) The whole Olivia/Gus/Natalia cycle. The scenes with Olivia talking about her impending death could have been written by Philips, herself. The dynamic between the three characters is so rich, it reminds me of the mid 70s, when shows like GL and DOOL were at the top of their game. And Crystal Chappell is so much like the best actors from that era; Denise Alexander and Beverly Penberthy and Maureen Garrett. And, by and large, that particular story was filmed in a really warm, old-school fashion. It *looks* good...which can't be said about most of the other stuff going on in Springfield at the time.

  4. Word for the (short-ass) week? Endearing! Also, peanutty and/or bananariffic. I know those are not real words, but they should be. Although I also think there's a case to be made for 'agreeance' and 'irregardless,' so don't listen to me.

I'm really enjoying the podcast - you guys seem so happy fangirl-giddy about the show, it's infectious. Hope there's more Otalia to talk about this week. I'm betting the over on three days, my SO (the pessimist) is taking the under at two days.

She's been burned before by Grey's, AMC, and countless others, and still doesn't believe GL will give Otalia a happy ending. I, however, believe it with all my foolish heart. I've never seen a story like this before - telly or film - and I can't imagine TPTB botching it after patiently laying such a quake-proof foundation.

Anyhoo, the story is finally picking up speed, so I'll just throw my hands in the air and enjoy the ride... and try not to vomit if I'm proven wrong.

  5. Snapper -
I love your comments about Doris. You are spot on. She's not a nice person (generally), and I think her mouth off to Frank is something I believe she'd do. As I mentioned in the podcast, I was happy to see it only because it means they'll be forced into dealing with this Frank issue sooner rather than later.

I think a lot of people were clamoring for a Liv/Doris friendship for a couple of reasons. One being that she's obviously supportive of Otalia, to the point of lending a helping hand (or fist). The other is that Orlagh Cassidy is a lot of fun, especially paired with Crystal Chappell. It's almost too much awesome in one scene. I know for sure that I love these two in scenes together, but I am also perfectly fine with their interactions being slightly adversarial. I'm a hooch for combative/aggressive Olivia, so that could work very nicely.

I agree with you re: the hug maybe being just a visual to what he's been told. I just think Frank's a clueless bastard, and I was hoping for something more undeniable for selfish reasons. Okay, anyone who makes a DeNiro reference in comments is officially capital A fucking awesome. I feel an overwhelming sense of geeky comraderie.

We loved your post! That kind of thoughtful analysis totally revs our engines, as you can see. It was fun to think about and discuss, so thank you for sharing it with us.

The problem with Corday is the mode is the message. Meaning his assholic tone eviscerates any and all intelligent points he may have contributed. By nature, there will be things that are completely different from what Irna imagined, and would probably turn her stomach upon inspection until she got used to them. However, I do believe there’s a thing called tact and class, which wasn’t observed at all with his comments. A historic institution like Guiding Light gets canceled, hundreds of people are potentially losing their jobs, fans everywhere are heartbroken, and you’re going to release a diatribe about how the show’s been done without an homage to its creator? Really? Not only was the timing inconsiderate as fuck, he’s wrong. With gripping stories being told like Otalia and Shaynah, I think Irna would have been pleased at the direction the storytelling has taken. I also agree with your assessment of CC as an old style soap star. I will agree with you that some of the episodes after the transition to digital video/handheld looked downright awful. Even now, once and awhile I notice the shaky-cam and it annoys the crap out of me. But the fact of the matter is economics were a huge factor in the “ESPN” style GL adopted (and has since strengthened, in my opinion). I have to believe a trailblazer like Irna would have innovated to save money if she had to, as well. It was a matter of keeping the show going, and also trying to stay ahead of the curve with digital production becoming a realistic and cheaper method of production. At this point, I think there are some fringe benefits to the style – it’s much more intimate, and I enjoy the freedom of movement and such it affords the actors. Anyway, sorry for going into rant mode, but those remarks from Corday really chapped me.

  6. Kathy –
Thanks for the comment. We are pretty happy fangirls, especially when discussing Otalia. Although we strive to maintain some semblance of faux smart seriousness. 

I will go with you and take the over on three days. I can’t imagine the cruelty of following up a one Otalia day week with a two Otalia day week.

I’m a permanent burn victim, like your SO, but I have forced myself to enjoy this story line from the comfy couch of optimism. I find it makes it more pleasurable to watch, and unlike the hacks at AMC, I trust Jill Lorie Hurst and Ellen Wheeler based on their track record thus far. Tell your SO that I still harbor the wounds of the Parking Lot of Doom, and I completely understand – but letting go of the safety bar is freeing and also makes this way more fun. I am trying not to punish GL because of the behavior of evil writers in the past.

I think we’re all excited about what’s to come for Otalia. Personally, the idea of it makes me grin like a maniac – I try not to contemplate on the subway. :)

  7. If you enjoyed the Deniro reference, my blog entry today should be right up your alley. (http://superherolunchbox.blogspot.com/)

Your Corday rant is justified...he really does come off as a dick - he almost comes off as joyful about the cancelation of GL. I'm just loathe to join the contingent that insists he doesn't know what he's talking about when he talks about soap history or Irna Philips. I don't think blind devotion to GL, by fans who refuse to look at what *isn't* working, is constructive. They should hate the guy all they want, but it's a mistake to think he doesn't have a bit of a clue about the business.

Hope you enjoy this weeks podcast. Your butt is still pretty amazing, I'm sure. And 'fatedde' is my new favorite word ever.

  11. LiDani,
    What up with Olivia:

Fought with Cassie Winslow, in the mud...but can't make a decision between a salt or mud treatment?

Paid Edmund Winslow to sabotage Reva and Josh's wedding reception by sabotaging the lights at the Beacon....but she can't pay a babysitter to have a "private" romantic dinner with Nat?

Spiked Alan's champagne with a sleeping pill...but can't spike Natalia's drink so she will loosen up?

Held Gus Aitoro captive in the Spaulding mansion basement...but can't find a way to spend more than 30 minutes alone with Natalia?

With all of Olivia's secret sex powers, her courage, strength and intellect...she can't surf the net or rent "Personal Best" to get things moving along?

Glad I got that off my chesticals!

You're spot on with pod cast 3 girls, your postmortems of the weekly shows is dead on...pardon the pun.

  12. My one word is SCRUB, as in "Frank is a scrub who can't get no love from...anyone." I wanted my one word to be fist of fury, but I noticed, just in time, that it wasn't one word.

Dani, your line about the missing Doris scene almost made me fall out of my chair. That would have been awesome.

And neither of you bought my date theory. When I heard that, I felt like Frank after his beat down. Although, I just wanna say to Dani that talk of kitties does not necessarly signal a non-date. In fact kitty talk could signify a really good date. ;)

Anyway, I'm lovin' the podcast and here's hoping that you babes have much more to talk about after this week.

  13. what the hell, first you can't take your kid on a date and now fruit can't be dessert?!

so loved your comment on the article re: differences between liv & cc. i came across the magazine quite unexpectedly at work, reading it made my knees wobbly and your comment left me aswoon all over again.

word of this week (for the alliteration whore): finallyfrankfreeotalia!--can i just say i am ecstatic that we will NEVER again have to watch whathisname touch or kiss natalia?!

  14. Lana-
I know the guy has put in his time. And I promise, I don't blindly follow *anyone*. But I really do think he's wrong on this. And I'm way less educated than him on the world of soaps, so my opinion means nothing. But I really do think the show is great right now, and Irna would like it. She probably wouldn't want me to punch him in the face though, so I won't.

    Rose and Rhonda,
Im so glad you came back! lol We've been on official Rose and Rhonda watch ever since you didn't comment after we teased you last week. Dani was sure that if you listened you know we tease those we love, but I was worried. Dani had to call me when she found your comment so I'd stop biting my fingernails! I'm glad your chesticals are free of burdens. :D Dont forget Nat once locked Liv in a bathroom. Just sayin- a skill she might wish to employ now too.

    Tallulah
ROFL about kitties meaning a good date. And 'Scrub' is an amazing word for the week and I love it big time.

    Bonita-
Thank you for our babe rose. lol In Liz's book, if it doesnt have chocolate- its not a real desert. And trust me, we are extremely humble. We are in total awe of all our listeners and commenters. We love each and every one of you. We play the inflated head because we think its funny, but in real life we're kind of like the nerdy girls who just got asked to prom by the football star. We have had thousands more listens than I ever thought we would, and from 30 countries. Thats pretty incredible, and has nothing to do with us. This show and this story are amazing, we're so lucky to be involved in any way with it.

    11) Doris outing people:

What can I say, I grinned. I know, I shouldn't have, but Doris and me grinning have a compulsive relationship. ("compulsive relationship"? what the hell _is_ that?! so forced.)

  16. I once again will have to don my Kevlar vest and say what needs to be said: CC needs to lay off the collagen injections. The woman is a natural beauty, and those artificial lips are really distracting, and not a good look. She doesn't need enhancement. They kind of made the last couple of Otalia episodes really NOT sexy to me.

Riot - you are so on target comparing Frank to the Hoff! He even wears that Members Only jacket, circa 1983. Shoulder tabs!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Now, I feel I must sum up my feelings in bullet / short form. So.
    1. Riot.
    Love.

    2. Hoff.
Perfection. (Hoff is a looong standing joke with many of my friends. If BG means something to you- I must.know.now.)

    3. Fight scene.
May or may not have a rockin video from Dani coming.

    4. Moan ring tone.
    Send it to me.

    5. E-mail.
    Waiting.

And Lana, I think Liv's lips are distracting for sure- but I think they look great- not fake. I dont even think they are fake? Either way- no complaint from me! Other than they are looking a little lonely. And Members Only jackets should only be worn ironically.

    Snapper -
Ooooh, you went there. I actually have to disagree with you, I love her lips. I have no idea if they're injected or not (I actually don't want to know), but I think she generally looks kissably hot. Long scooped t-shirts aside.

Although it shouldn't need to be said, don't feel like you have to moderate your opinions. We're not in Camazotz, thank god.

  19. LiDani,

How sweet you 2 are!!! No worries here, we love the banter, the pod casts are hysterical, and it keeps us alive during these weeks of "otalia lull". We are not worthy of you loosing

To make amends, Rhonda "attempted" to make pancakes in your honor this morning, but after a half hour and a half a box later, she has opted for lighting a candle instead. I took off work and have vowed to increase valium dosage during today's episode!

  22. Hi Liz/Dani,
Girls and processing, come on, GL is getting this one right! ha, ha.

Just doing a drive by to say awesome podcast and to support Dani in her efforts to remain spoiler-free. Dani I did the same thing and I have to say it was incredibly liberating. There's been a bit of an ugly cycle of spoiler, spec, spoiler, spec that I realized was taking away from my enjoyment of the show. I hope you can shake it, its brilliant when you can. I know the otalia crack den is tempting, but you can do it!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. hey snapper,

no bullets... i've seen other comments in the same vein. i just don't see what you are seeing and i have an eye that's easily offended by fake parts. if you look back to her early days on DOOL she had the same lips.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88jB6-DilqM

so if she's been doing collagen, it's been going on for 20 years. i think it's just the makeup and angles sometimes. i personally hate it when she wears dark lipstick... it totally doesn't suit her. of course i'm also a big fan of the natural look. i've been appalled by some of the makeup efforts that have been inflicted on cc in recent weeks. collagen also wouldn't seem to fit with her comment about not liking to wear makeup, etc.

i think it's also impossible to compare photos that are so different. smile/no smile, different angles & hair, different surrounding colours, and possibly very different makeup. just saying... with much gentleness in my heart :-} (and mine, i assure you, is a collagen free smile)

now if you wanna talk about her ghastly hairstyle of late, i'd be with you on that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I honestly think her upper lip has been enhanced, but it is possible it's make-up and not collegen. Either way, I think it looks awful. That woman is teeming with natural beauty...I don't understand why they go so heavy on the make-up. Remember way back when Olivia was dying? There was an episode where she's sitting on a park Bench with Rick, explaining that she has only weeks to live. She has a minimum amount of make-up on, and lord have mercy, a dying woman never looked so damned good.

Yeah - I'm not loving the hair. It obscures those amazing cheek bones.

    These are IMPORTANT points!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. About religion in the s/l: can I do a little blog-whoring? Because I posted about that week before last: As the Culture TurnsIt is, I agree, a really radical, vital part of what makes Otalia so frakkin' awesome . . . but I think you only insinuated half of it. Yes, it tells 75 year-old Midwestern church-ladies (who've watched GL for 50 years) "God is OK with this".

But it ALSO tells 35 year-old battle-scarred queers, who haven't darked the door of a church (synogogue, etc) since they came out, "God is OK with this." [So, y'know, they---and the Olivias of the world---might check out a church again? (Like my gay-bishop-ordaining Episcopal Church: that's me doing some more whoring! ;-D)

Still loving the podcast . . . but to my "older than Daisy and younger than Alan" ears, Dani's mike drops out sometimes. Any chance for technical improvements? [A "new production model" as it were? *g*]

  27. damn right snapper, these are very IMPORTANT points. and she was stunning when she was dying LOL. the worst makeup was the day she went for dinner at the spauldings, when she went outside to talk to emma AAAAAK!

the hair... i like it best long and straight (?) or the morning she was hungover (the blender moment) and had it pulled back.

but really, shave her bald and dress her in a paper bag and i am so there... unless, of course, she's wearing red lipstick.

  28. Liz and Dani -
I keep meaning to ask if you guys have a copy of a long-out-of-print book called Soap World? If I knew where my copy was, I'd send it to you, but I fear it's in storage, somewhere. It's well worth having a look at, as it is chock full of great background info about the people - such as Irna Philips - who created this genre from scratch, and moved it from radio to television. It's really interesting to read about how Irna moved from creaitng GL, to ATWT, and then to Another World (get it? From As the World Turns, to Another World.) I actually noticed one of the young people on GL not too long ago talking about "running way to Bay City" - where AW was set. I liked that bit of a shout-out to Irna.

    ReplyDelete
  29. JCF- We're looking into ways to correct this.
