PaaV Podcast #4

Direct Download: paav4-.mp3

Runtime: 1 hour, 21 minutes

Podcast #4 lives. We had 3 days of Otalia this week, which seems like a lot, but we are still bitter about the cruel CBS preview fake out. As usual, we got lots of rad emails and comments, which further proves that you guys are funnier than we are.

Notes:

- We totally lied about the new website, it isn't live yet. But it is set up to automatically forward you to the blogspot site, so feel free to update your bookmarks now. Check back through the week to see the spiffy, shiny new site: pancakesandavalium.com

- Herbal Essences is citrus-y. Just saying. Rub it in!

- I actually do want to know what the F Blake was rambling about during the massage regarding her love life, so feel free to enlighten me (Dani) in the comments or in an email. Most of the old GL I've watched has been Olivia Spencer-centric.

- We're on itunes! Yay. Thanks to everyone who asked about it - now you can subscribe there if you prefer that. We're all fancy and whatnot.

- Stuff we talked about. From Holly Norris to Olivia Spencer - Ladies and Gentlemen, The B-52s - Deep Soap: Happy Mothers Day

- We tried out some new recording software this week, so let us know what you think about it. You know, if you want to.

- Dani is still going strong being spoiler-free and would like to thank the people cheering her on. Recovery is hard, but we can all do it one step at a time.
....And Dani fell off the wagon. Who had one week in the pool?

  1. I haven't listened to the podcast the entire way through yet, but since you asked, your new recording software is great! The lack of the extreme channel separation from the previous 'casts and the lessened hiss makes for a much better listening experience.

  2. Thanks for the feedback Karen! We're literally learning on the fly with all of this. I *think* we have an even better situation worked out for next week.

  3. Haven't listened yet, but yay for Itunes! I know what I'm listening to during my commute to work today.

  4. What a great way to usher in the work day, and take my mind off the urine smell of the godforsaken Muni trains. And my loud/abrupt laughter at the Astroglide reference was just enough to convince other riders that I was deranged, thus ensuring an empty seat next to me for the entire ride.

We're on totally different pages re Frank. He pissed me off at the hospital - not for getting angry (I think the dude has every right to be angry, and it has nothing to do with same sex relationships), but with his "what *ARE* you?" crack. That was tacky. HOWEVER, when he met up with Rafe at the 7-11, I thought he was actually being quite a stand-up guy, and not a at all a dick. I think Frank knows it's only a matter of time before Rafe hears about his mother being in a relationship with another woman, and he knows there will be some people who have not-so-great things to say about it. I felt he was being sincere and supportive when he told Rafe that his mom is a great lady. I think Frank really does think Natalia *is* a great lady (because she IS.) I also think his urge to smack Olivia is storng, but his innate urge to be The Nice Guy is stronger. It's in his make-up to do the right thing. He has always been the only constant in the Cooper family. Notice how half-assed a meltdown he had? Attacking a piece of toast is about as mean as Frank can ever get. A lesser man would have run into Rafe and spilled the beans a la Doris.

Rafe's hat: that was some hideousness, right there. The funny thing is, it's the exact same hat Olivia wore during the graveyard confession, just a different color. Olivia rocked that hat. Rafe looked like he should be waiting for a little, yellow bus to pick him up and take him to the adult day care center.

Blake - y'all already got my email about her, so I can skip that. I don't see her with Frank, at all. Not going to happen. Too much history as booty call buddies there. She'd definitely give Frank some pity sex, but she will never love him or be in a real relationship with him. Plus, there's talk of Jerry Ver Dorn coming back.

I love it that I'm not the only one who thinks Frank = Fredo.

  5. Great job as usual! I especially loved the image of Liv as Mt. HotOlivia getting closer and closer to erupting - so fitting...also agree with you guys on the Farmhouse of Love remaining the final destination for Otalia. I have to disagree on Frankie though, I don't think he is being bitchy in his scenes with Rafe, he's back to being Mr. Nice Guy - yawn (also, though I know that this will destroy any chances I might have had of ever being taken seriously by anyone: I kinda liked Rafe with his li'l hat...I must be a sucker for the urbansuburban fakegangsta ethnic bohemian emo kid look)
So, Dani fell off the wagon, huh? Well, I guess if you can remain spoilerfree you have the satisfaction of knowing that you possess a superhuman amount of selfcontrol comparable only to Natalia's ability to remain unfazed by Olivia's sex stare - but if you're a weak spoilerho, you can listen to CC's awesome BPD podcast, so there are only winners, right?

  6. Oooh, guys, I disagree. It'll have to be put in an email.

Lizz, don't worry, I'll harass Dani this time.

Dani, do worry. And make room in your inbox.

First of all, you're my HEROES, as you bring the funny like no one else! OMG, so many spit-take moments. And then on top of it all, staying spoiler-free. Awesome...don't let anyone tempt you from straying!

I have to admit I lost patience this week with a lot of the response(aka internet panic meisters, and some of the ones who did this week, kind of surprised me). Unfortunately there was either too much reading into, or misreading of the craziest things (some feeling like it was the beginning of the end, or we'd be in endless limbo, etc.). And actually I'd be fine to have discourse over it, except then many ran to spoilers as the way to resolve the doubt - no fun!, and really its all there to be read, if we just remember who these characters are, and admire what CC/JL are doing with every beat. Although I do agree with Liz, too many scenes were cut-off/short this past week and I think psychologically that was unsettling, and fed into the unrest, but I didn't feel the content should have. My only disagreement was on the Frank read, but you have enuf folks jumping on that. And while I hated Blake being so cluelessly there, I loved when she spoke about her getting it right that one time, and we all knew she was referring back to Liv/Nat - for those lines and how the resonated for them, I dug Blake at that moment.

Totally agree that while the slow is killing us, its a good and delicious death. Yes, Nat's superhero powers seem to include being able to withstand Olivia's love gaze, and this is when we know a love match has been made - eventually Nat will prove no matter what Liv throws at her or how intense it gets, Nat'll be strong enough and will stay, and that's what Liv needs to get on a deep level in order to be secure in their love. In the meantime, we're going to get so many tender, intense, amazing moments, and I'm totally on board with it all.

Dani: Yes, Liv's eyes should be licensed - she can killz with her eyes. and OMG, GL should have been charging 3.99 a minute for the midnight hike talk - ROFL but so true!
and Liz: yes, you're bringing the art of the retentive, to a whole new level, but we adore you for it - you keep on obsessing over every little detail wrong or right, its awesome.

Will listen again later - too much funny for one sitting!

  8. Snapper-
A woman wore that hat during the my two mommies thing too- I noticed it this week. lol And really about Flake / Blank? Everything seems to be pushing them together, but we honestly don't know the history... Re: Frank, I believe he was being honest when he said that too. I dont think he's being bitchy about Nat at all. Maybe I didnt make sense. lol I think he's being bitchy and unfair to Olivia. Which, like I said, I get. But I still think he is over villanizing Olivia in this situation... Then again I generally dislike his character even detached from Natalia- so there ya go.

Technopag- I'm skipping over the 'I like Rafe in his hat' garbage and going right to Dani being a crack whore again. She did much better this time than she did the last time we went spoiler free together, so maybe next time she'll actually make it ten days?!? :D Thanks for listening and commenting.

    Riot.
Harassing Dani and not me? I'm canceling the wedding photographer. Although I guess I cant blame you... Dani is 98% cooler than I am. I do want to know what you disagree about though. ;) My inbox is cold and lonely...

    Boobookitty,
You are always so sweet and flattering. We were in a weird mood this week, translated to hopefully some funny. lol I totally agree, Im so on board for this ride no matter how slow it is. If for nothing else, I love seeing this tenderness and caution in Olivia- something I don't think we've seen much of before. And I am so anal retentive its not even funny. lol I know it. My poor family...

    XO Liz

  9. Ok, two more things (your podcast is like Otalia, itself: I get so much from listening a second time):

Am I the only one who wants to know where the fuck Olivia's whole fiercely-protective-of-the-ones-she-loves thing disappeared to when Blake made that nasty crack about Natalia "screwing everything up"??? If I were in that situation with my best friend - let alone the woman I was in love with - I'd be all over Blake like white on rice. At the very least, forcing restraint, I'd have to say, "Hey...hold on, now. Where do you get off saying something like that???" Olivia just stands there, says nothing, and then agrees to let Blake be a spectator while she and Natalia soak or wait for massage, or whatever the hell treatment that was supposed to be? I think not. I swear the pod people made away with Olivia for that moment.

You guys swear that you don't see any foreshadowing in Olivia's comment about not letting things stay in limbo/it being important to let the other get on with her life...yet you do sound worried. I don't think there's a thing to worry about. If anything, I think that little piece of dialogue is both important and really positive: it's evidence that Olivia may have undergone a lot of changes, but that she's still tough. She doesn't want to end up with a broken heart but the bottom line is, she can and will get through it if she does. And, while she's in love with Natalia, she's still the same, old Olivia who likes things on her own terms: I love you. Let's do this. If you can't, tell me now. Thumbs up to the writers for not showing us Olivia's changes, and her softer side, without killing her spirit.

You guys are so much geeky goodness, I don't even hate you for getting my first name right, but butchering my last name.

I'll shut up and drink my Doll Malt Liquor, now.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Really? I butchered your last name too? Dammit. Well, we'll just have to have you on sometime to school us in it.

  11. Great job again girls....

Rhonda and I were really glad you mentioned Olivia's mother. We think that Olivia's trust issues and overly cautious behavior are directly caused by her demeaning, alcoholic and controlling mother. Olivia didn't have the nurturing aspect most children receive from a loving mother. This has been the primary attribute that draws her to Natalia. O has never found that kind of unconditional love from anyone she has ever been with. Until Natalia came into Olivia's life, she was motivated by what she was "going to get" from a relationship. O has never had to come to grips with what it is really like to give without it being tied to an expectation. It was way her mother made her feel "less than" that keeps her from jumping in without reservations.

You were spot on when you said Nat needs to "zip" it! I keep finding myself saying "chcht" like Cesar Millan on the Dog Whisper every time Nat starts to talk about their relationship, or mentioning the Cooper's one more time. Rhonda also wants to say she thinks that N & O need to open their own web mall specializing in sports clothes and agrees with you that O was hot hot hot in their outdoor scenes. We both agree that the first person they should come out to is Jane...for the love of Pete! On the other hand we were OK with Emma's impromptu visit to the spa because she is a reminder that she is the "super glue" that binds O and N together. Emma is a subtle reminder that with N at her side, she can be the kind of mother she herself never had.

    Keep it up,
    Rose and Rhonda

  12. I have a different take re "limbo" (Maybe I'm spoiled---does listening to the Goddess Podcast count? She let drop a couple of things, but nothing too jaw-dropping).

I didn't hear her say "Clarify for me that this is GOING to Get Sexual between us, or I'm out-of-here." I understand that Olivia 1.0 totally would be there, but not the New, Natalized&Improved Model.

No, I think she's saying "Natalia, if you don't think you can EVER be sexual with me, I don't want to keep you from somebody cough Somebody-with-a-Penis cough whom you CAN Get Missionary with." ;-X

    ***

Totally agree w/ y'alls: that windbreaker-grabbing scene? Malacious Attempted HOMOCIDE of Otaliaholics! Book 'em, Dani. ;-) (Oh, shite, are you young'uns even gonna get that?)

    ***

Vast technical improvements, thanks. (Can put off that hearing-aide appt. for another year! ;-/)

    ***

Thanks so much for the blog shout-out . . . too bad that was just a one-off (while my main blog-pal was on vacation). So help me, Otalia might make ME blog again on a regular basis. Addictions are deadly! ;-D

  13. Hey, does going spoiler-free mean that you didn't listen to the BPP with Crystal Chappell? Because she's totally spoiler central.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Snapper - Liz and I discussed this a bit, and I think basically we both think he's a jerk to and about Olivia. Also, it's harder for me to see Frank as the good guy who's occasionally a butthead because I haven't watched the show super long. I see him as the butthead who's occasionally a good guy. Most of what I've seen him do that's "good" for Natalia is backed by a transparent agenda. Though I agree with you, I think he meant what he said to Rafe and that was rad of him.

And I love that there's another dork out there making Godfather references with regards to a soap opera. Frank is TOTALLY Fredo. End of story.

Technopag - I did indeed fall off the wagon today. I had listened to CC's podcast, and honestly, it was a bit spoilery but not like her chat. There weren't any direct references, so I was fine with it and my recovery. I just had a moment of unmoderated weakness today and said fuck it. I wish I could say I was sorry, but I missed the crack. Sweet, sweet crack.

riot - There's always room in my inbox for you! Ready and waiting. ;)

boobookitty - LOL, I feel a little bad reading your comment knowing I took a nose dive off the wagon shortly after it. Oh well. I may try rehab again after this week.

The one awesome thing about the internet panic brigade is that it's really fun to make fun of them. Hehe. As to being killed slowly by CC/JL and the writers, well, I can think of worse ways to die. As long as I can scream and moan along the way...

Snapper 2 - It was a little bit odd that Olivia didn't rip Blake's face off in the doorway, but as I said, I think she was waiting on a cue from Natalia. She gave her a look that to me said, "Just say the word." I like that Olivia is protective without being overbearing. She'll step in, but not without Natalia's consent/approval. Which I think has evolved from Olivia's original approach with Nat, which was to charge in and fix shit.

I don't think either of us is really worried about Olivia's comment about letting the other person live their life...I just know that the writers don't throw away lines, and that one seemed like an Important One. But I like your take on it. I love that Olivia is asserting herself a bit, but also retaining the soft concern for Natalia's feelings. Frankly, it makes my knees weak.

Rose and Rhonda - I would love to see more with Olivia's mother. Not back from the dead or anything, but in terms of events from the past, including her mother's death. I think the way Olivia is with Emma is a direct result of her rocky relationship with her mother. It's realistic and really makes Olivia interesting.

Even Liz and I had to admit that as frustrating as the interruptions are, you can't be mad at Emma. She's just too freaking cute (and also, intuitive). Blake on the other hand...

JCF - That's an interesting take on the limbo. As much as I love the arc Olivia's gone through, I have to believe there's a part of her that is/was slightly concerned she's the only one responding to the physical stuff. Who knows, though, I would be as quick to believe your theory as mine.

Book 'em Dani, LOL. I love that so much. I am young for the reference, but luckily I am a complete television geek and I totally get it and now love you for it. Can it be my job to arrest people in Springfield? I think I'd be badass at it.

If you blog it, they will come!

Snapper 3 - I did listen to the CC BPP, and I actually thought she wasn't as spoilery as she's been in the past. It seemed like she was dropping a lot of vague timeframes but not anything super specific. And anything with CC is an exemption, as far as I'm concerned. Not that I need to worry about that, because I picked up a hefty supply of spoiler crack earlier. ;)

  17. BRAVA! Nice podcast folks. Sound levels = much better.

Astroglide, Holivia, captain of the shallow ship... ooooh, I love the way you two think. Thank you for the laughs. Keep this up and you'll be elevated to "righteous babe" status.

The whole "if" issue... I get why it sparked fear in Liv, but I take Nat at her word. I think she was talking more broadly about their relationship, that is, just because they've declared their love doesn't mean that it'll all work out. She knows there's much baggage for BOTH OF THEM to unpack as they progress (any of which could become a herd of cows on the tracks). It makes the scene that follows that much more hilariously ironic.

And the comment by Liv that she travels light... ummm yeah... hahahahahaha. She'll need a case of Astroglide to get that into my "that's totally believable" bin.

I also really liked your point above on Blake's rude comment,"I think she was waiting on a cue from Natalia. She gave her a look that to me said, "Just say the word." I'm somewhat Oliviaesque in attitude and I would never step in before it was clear that the person I was with wanted/needed it. It's just not cool otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous poster - Indeed, douchebaggery is a word that will go into the PaaV lexicon. Liz will probably be using it again shortly. Where there are Coopers...

WannaB - Wow, that's the highest praise I think we've ever gotten. Liz in a vest is a sight to behold. I don't even have a speech ready, I'm so unprepared...I'd like to thank my grandmother for babysitting me while watching soaps all day. We'd like to thank CC/JL for being smokin' hot together...and we'd like to thank JLH and EW for being total geniuses who allow us to faint in front of our TVs daily. The jacket non-kiss investigation is still pending. I'll keep you posted.

bonita - I also take Nat at her word. And I believed her when she tried to re-phrase the true meaning of what she was trying to say. Although I do think they're interpreting the small stuff differently right now based on their positions and where they've come from. Which makes for awesomely layered scenes.

I really liked Olivia's sort of hands-off approach with Blake. I think it showed she has trust in Nat to stand up for herself, and also to ask for Olivia when she's needed. No one wants to feel babied, but I think Natalia knows Olivia has her back.

I'm totally saving you a spot aboard the shallow ship!

    - Dani

Douchebag may be one of my favorite words ever. Asshat is another good one...

JCF- We did see it, but not until AFTER we'd taped (with the holiday, we taped early this week) so probably next week...

And WannaB- To be compared to Liv in her vest? So not worthy.

Thanks for listening you guys! We love ya!!
